Harvesting and preparation: The art of guaranteeing quality before shipment

The harvesting of broodstock is a delicate stage that has a direct impact on the quality of the reproductive stock and its viability after transport. Improper handling or excessive stress can compromise the health of the shrimps and reduce their reproductive potential.

In our BMCs, each phase of the process (from harvesting to preparation for shipment) is rigorously controlled to minimize stress, preserve the vitality of the broodstock and ensure optimal quality until they arrive at the customers.

Harvesting is carried out when the shrimp have reached the ideal size to be sent to customers. This stage requires great attention to minimize stress on the animals.

Harvesting, a process under close surveillance

The harvesting of the broodstock follows a strict protocol to guarantee their physiological integrity.

First, it is generally carried out during the coolest hours of the day (early morning or late afternoon) in order to reduce thermal stress and ensure a smooth transition to the conditioning tanks.

Gentle handling of the shrimps is necessary to avoid any injury that could compromise their health. For this purpose, we use fine-mesh landing nets to avoid injury.

Limited handling time avoids any build-up of stress for the shrimps that could impact their post-transport survival.

Reconditioning before shipment

Before being shipped, the broodstock undergo a reconditioning phase that optimizes their resistance to transport and improves their adaptation to their new environment.

Final selection and conditioning

Before being sent to the customer, a final selection is made to guarantee the conformity of the broodstock. The criteria for this selection concern, first, the general state of health of the shrimp, its vitality, and the absence of injuries, but also a weight conforming to the standards and finally a quality of gametes and optimal sexual maturity.

Ready for transport

For transport, we use sealed oxygenation bags filled with water and enriched with oxygen, guaranteeing optimal survival. This includes maintaining a stable temperature using specialized cooling boxes.
