Spawning selection: choosing the best for optimal production

Discover the exact criteria for selecting a high-performance spawner. How does Kona Bay apply these principles to optimize its production? Decoding a key process in the aquaculture industry.

In shrimp farming, the selection of broodstock is a decisive stage that directly influences the productivity and profitability of a farm. Choosing the best is not just a question of size or weight: it is a scientific process based on rigorous criteria, ranging from genetics to the physiological health of the shrimp. A good breeding stock must not only exhibit rapid and uniform growth, but also be disease resistant and able to pass on these characteristics to its offspring.

In facilities such as our BMCs, each breeding stock is carefully evaluated through a process of weighing, health checks and sorting by sex to ensure optimal reproductive performance.

Kona Bay selection

Grading and selection

Our selection process is crucial to ensuring animal reproductive performance.

The first stage consists of sorting the shrimps according to their size and their genetic potential. Only the strongest and most vigorous individuals are selected to ensure high-quality reproduction for the next generation.

Weighing and health

Each breeder is weighed and undergoes a health assessment. Only those showing signs of good health are kept. Regular examinations enable us to detect any signs of stress, injury or illness that could compromise reproductive performance (abnormal behavior, unusual pigmentation, loss of vitality). We carry out in-depth analyses to verify the physiological state and quality of the gametes, by monitoring sperm production and ovarian maturation.

Selection by sex

A balanced ratio of males to females is essential to maintain a high reproduction rate. The optimal ratio is generally 1 male to 2 to 3 females, thus ensuring effective fertilization while avoiding excessive competition between males. The breeding animals are placed in optimal conditions to minimize stress and maximize their reproductive potential.

Thanks to these advanced selection protocols, our BMCs guarantee high-quality genetics and long-term performance stability. By combining scientific expertise and rigorous practices, we optimize each stage of the process, thus ensuring that breeders have healthy and high-performance breeding stock for sustainable and profitable production.
